#11 Point Vicente Lighthouse

As one of my 25 things in NYC, I went to visit the Little Red Lighthouse. Since California offers so many options for fabulous lighthouses, I knew I wanted to include that on my list here too. The one I chose is the Point Vincente Lighthouse.
Getting there is quite the experience. The drive from Long Beach takes a path along the ocean through San Pedro and Rancho Palos Verdes. The view is amazing, and I had to really focus to keep my eyes on the road instead of the scenery.
The whole set-up is very low-key. Parking is in an area of dirt surrounded by a chain-link fence; the check-in table is
run by teenagers. It's a short path to the lighthouse:

It's not a very tall one, but the stairs are quite steep and narrow and curvy.

Right before the top, there is one last set of stairs that are practically straight up and very, very tiny.

But the view is so worth it!! This is what you can see from the top.

Below is where the horn is located. There is a guard seated about 100 feet away from it keeping people from going near. The sound is incredibly loud, and it sounds every five minutes.

The lighthouse is run under the jurisdiction of the Coast Guard. There are two tiny free-standing structures nearby
that house Coast Guard memorabilia, including flags, miniatures, historical documents and vessel parts. Very cool!
